Why A Good Website is Necessary
January 4, 2022
Welcome to my new website! Three years ago I launched my business and decided I would put time and money into a “real” website “later.” I threw together a quick Blogger site that frankly didn’t do me any favors. It got the word out but did not represent the quality of my work. It’s the old adage about the cobbler’s child having no shoes. I was too busy to build a better site!
“Later” turned into years but with the end of 2021 approaching, I decided to do something about it! I partnered with Levent Ozgur and budgeted what it would take to create not just a passable site, but the best site I was capable of creating with everything I wanted.
Using my process for organizing website content, I created the top-level navigation, site map and wireframe before I began discussions with Levent on the site development.
There was some back and forth between us – some choices driven by price, other by Levent’s knowledge of best practices. For design, I knew I wanted to reflect the bold colors of my logo (thank you Silverline Graphics) and the natural landscapes I love here in New Hampshire’s White Mountains and Maine’s coast. No stock images of flying social media logos and hipsters working in coffee shops. I wanted my site (and any site I create) to look beautiful and function exceptionally well.
While my business did great for the first three years (even with a second-class website) I’ll never know what opportunities I missed. Who visited my site and passed because I did not put my best foot forward digitally speaking? I’ll never know.
I do know that a website is the best investment you can make in your business. Look at your site now. Is it truly mobile-friendly? Are the photos and images visually arresting? Is the content robust, for readers and search engines? Is it old? Technology changes constantly. Don’t be left behind.
